There were no big surprises during the first day of the main draw of the Erste Bank Open at Vienna’s Stadthalle. With Matteo Berrettini (ITA/3) and Diego Schwartzman (ARG/5) two seeded players advanced to the second round. Even though a qualifier, Marton Fucsovics’ (HUN) win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego wasn’t really suprising as the two players are only separated by 11 spots in the ATP rankings.
Schwartzman had the honor to play the inaugurating match of this year’s Erste Bank Open’s main draw on the centercourt against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert. And the Argentinian showed no mercy, booking a spot in the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win. The same result Fucsovics posted against Sonego.
It was more of a struggle for Italian’s shooting star Matteo Berrettin. He lost the first set to Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, but fought back and in the end took the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Grigor Dimitrov had no problems whatsoever. The Bulgarian ousted qualifier Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia 6-3, 7-5.
In the final match of the day no. 2 seed Karen Khachanov (RUS) beat Hubert Hurkacz (POL) 6-4, 7-6(3).
