The third quarter final of the Erste Bank Open turned out to be a real thriller. In the end, it was Borna Coric (CRO/ATP 27) who kept the upper hand and advanced to the semi-final with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) win over Hubert Hurkacz (POL/ATP 11).
Coric converted his first match point after 2:53 hours. In the time before, the fans were treated to a see-saw battle of epic proportions with both players dominating on their serve. There was only one break and that went in favor of Coric in the first set.
The atmosphere in the sold out Wiener Stadthalle was once again electric, even without a local hero playing. That was due to world class tennis that sometimes not only left the fans but also the players stunned. In the deciding tie-break the Croatian prevailed and can now look forward to his first semi-final at the Erste Bank Open.
Shapovalov eliminates Evans
There he will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov (ATP 19) who kept the upper hand against Great Britain’s Dan Evans (ATP 26), beating him 6-3, 6-3.
