Wildcard player Jurij Rodionov faced a too tough battle in the first round of qualification, as he was without a chance against Pierres-Hugues Herbert from France, the number 1 of the qualification. Rodionov lost 1-6, 2-6 in just under 56 minutes. Der 19-year old Austrian got on the board when Herbert already had a 5-0 lead in the first set but wasn’t able to rein in his nerves in the second either.
The match between Lucas Miedler and Andrey Rublev was more or less a blue-copy of Rodionov’s match. Miedler also lost 1-6, 2-6 in only 53 minutes.
Sebastian Ofner put up the most fight of the three Austrians. He won the first set against higher ranked Ruben Bemelmans from Belgium 6-3 before bowing out 3-6, 4-6.
The second match on the centercourt lasted a while longer: American Denis Kudla beat German Matthias Bachinger in three sets 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3. Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky advanced to the second qualification round also after a three-set battle against Bradley Klahn 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
