Juan Martin Del Potro has to delay his comeback on the ATP Tour which was planned for the fall, thus also missing the Erste Bank Open at Vienna’s Stadthalle. “Juan Martin Del Potro has been working hard on his comeback after breaking his kneecap in June at London’s Queen’s Club. Unfortunately, the injury is not yet completely healed”, explained tournament director Herwig Straka.
Del Potro has won the Erste Bank Open in 2012. For him, the strong Russian Andrey Rublev will move up to the main draw. Andy Murray who has won in Vienna in 2014 and 2016, on the other hand, is a hot contender for a wild card. The Scotsman has lately shown his returning form by getting to the quarter final in Beijing, where he lost to Dominic Thiem, who went on to win the tournament. “We are in steady contact with Andy Murray and have reserved a wild card for him. He would make an already strong field even better”, Straka emphasized.
