The fans in the sold-out Wiener Stadthalle were treated to one of the longest three-set matches in the history of the Viennese arena: Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics after 3:19 hours 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4) to advance to the Erste Bank Open 500 semifinals.
In the first set, Fucsovics had to save six break points to stay in the set, but was able to convert on the only chance he got at Kukushkin’s service. In the second set, Fucsovics had it nearly tied up, but wasn’t able to cash in on any of his three breakballs. However, the Hungarian was solid on serve, never facing a single break-point in the second set. In the tie-break, Kukushkin turned up the heat and took the decider 7-2.
Both players were shaky on serve in the third and after break and re-break, the match had to be decided in the tie-break again. Once again, the man from Kazakhstan held the upper hand. After 3:19 hours he converted the match point to make it 7-4 in the tie-break.
