Schwartzman and Rublev advance

Diego Schwartzman (ARG/5) is the first player to make it to the quarterfinals at this year’s Erste Bank Open. After a marathon match against Sam Querrey (USA), Schwartzman was victorious in three close sets. The first match went to the American in the tiebreak, but Schwartzman struck back and took the second set with a break. In the final set, Schwartzman already had match point at 6-5 and service Querrey, but the American managed to force a tiebreak in which he took a quick 2-0 lead. This, however, would not last, as Schwartzman won the next six points. Then, momentum shifted once again, with Querrey closing the gap to 6-5 but an easy backhand mistake by Querrey sealed the American’s fate. In the end it was 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(5) Schwartzman.

Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta also needed three sets to beat Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1.

Moscow winner Andrey Rublev beat Korean Hyeon Chung in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, while Aljaz Bedene (SLO) ousted Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
