Happy Birthday, Dominic! Looking forward to Thiem’s comeback at Erste Bank Open
After Dominic Thiem had to refrain from playing in his home tournament last year, Austria’s top star will be back this year at the tennis highlight, which takes place from October 22 to 30. The organizers of the Erste Bank Open are putting in congratulations for Thiem’s 29th birthday, which the 2020 US Open champion celebrates tomorrow, Saturday.
“We are looking forward to Dominic’s return to the Wiener Stadthalle. The atmosphere at his matches has always been very special in recent years, and this year will be no different. We wish him all the best for his birthday and a lot of sporting success for the coming weeks and months,” said Tournament Director Herwig Straka.
For the winner of 17 ATP tournaments, anticipation is also rising for his return to the Wiener Stadthalle. “It’s a huge thing to play in Vienna again this year. I have so many great memories of this tournament, so my victory in 2019 was one of the most emotional moments in my career,” Thiem stressed. Three years ago, the Lower Austrian defeated Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in the final in a dramatic match in three sets, turning the Wiener Stadthalle into a madhouse.
The fans can look forward to a first-class starting field at the Erste Bank Open next October: In addition to Thiem, the current world number one Daniil Medvedev, defending champion Alexander Zverev (GER), Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE), Matteo Berrettini (ITA) and last year’s finalist Frances Tiafoe (USA) will also serve in Vienna. In addition, it can be assumed that by the entry deadline at the end of September, further “top-class players” will register for the tennis classic, which was voted ATP 500 tournament of the year by the players in the previous season.
Trophy on Tour
Next week, in cooperation with tournament partners Rado and Mercedes-Benz, the annual Austria Tour of the Erste Bank Open winner’s trophy will also start again. The “Trophy on Tour” will begin at the “Ars Electronica Festival” in Linz and then make its way throughout Austria. For the first time, the trophy will also pay a visit to the “Vienna Design Week”. The journey of the Trophy can be followed on the social media platforms of the Erste Bank Open under the hashtag #trophyontour.
