Thiem finally cracks Verdasco

What a tennis night at Vienna’s Stadthalle. Dominic Thiem finally found a way to beat Fernando Verdasco (ESP) after four losses to the Spaniard, beating him in three sets and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open.

The match, though, started less than good for Thiem. Verdasco got an early break and served well, leading to a quick 6-3 win of the opener.

The momentum completely changed in the second set. Thiem didn’t lose a single point on serve and found four break points of which he converted one. That one was enough to take the set 6-3.

In the final set, Thiem steamrolled Verdasco, springing out to a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back, winning the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In the quarterfinals he will face another Spaniard in Pablo Carreno Busta. The match is scheduled as the second on the centercourt (not before 3.30 pm).
