Top stars coming to Vienna

Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Berrettini, Tiafoe – gigantic line-up for the Erste Bank Open with three top-4-stars! Wildcard reserved for Thiem.

The countdown for the Erste Bank Open 2022 is running down. From Thursday, 14th July, it’s only 100 days to go until the tennis highlight in Vienna kicks off. A great line-up for the ATP 500 tournament in the Wiener Stadthalle and at “Erste Bank Open 2 Go” on the premises of the Wiener Eislaufverein at the Heumarkt is taking shape, as the world’s number 1, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev (GER/2) and Stefanos Tsitsiaps (GRE/4) have already committed, thus making it three out of the top 4 players in the world. Additionally, Matteo Berrettini, who was in great shape during the grass swing and fan favorite Frances Tiafoe have also decided to play in Vienna.

Last year, Daniil Medvedev stunned the tennis world when he denied Serbia’s Novak Djokovic the triumph at all four Grand Slam tournaments with his victory at the US Open in New York. This year, the winner of 13 ATP tournaments (12 on hardcourt) reached the finals of the Australian Open. “Daniil Medvedev has continuously made his way to the top of the world rankings. Obviously, with his record on hardcourt he is among the favorites to win the trophy at the Erste Bank Open”, tournament director Herwig Straka explains.

Title defender Alexander Zverev is currently hard working on his comeback after getting an ankle injury during the French Open in Paris. In last year’s victory’s speech he stressed how much he likes to play in Vienna: “It was one of the most beautiful weeks of the year for me. I hope to enjoy the atmosphere here in many years to come.” Straka is optimistic that Zverev will be able to defend his title in October: “Sascha (Alexander Zverev) is progressing well in his recovery.” In 2021, Zverev defeated Frances Tiafoe in the finals, with the latter winning the hearts of the Austrian crowd during an unprecedented run from qualification to the finals with his great showmanship and spectacular tennis. This year, he wants to repeat his success.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini have lately made headlines with winning grass court tournaments. Tsitsipas took his first ATP title on grass at the end of June in Mallorca, while Berrettini returned from a two-month break after suffering a hand injury with wins in Stuttgart and London’s Queen’s Club. “With Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini we can present the audience of the Erste Bank Open two more top stars, who have been stunning fans around the world with their attractive kind of play.”

In 2019, Berrettini  was defeated by Dominic Thiem in the Erste Bank Open semifinals in three close sets. In the finals, Thiem beat Argentinian Diego Schwartzman also in three sets to win the title in Vienna for the first time. Speaking about Thiem: “If Dominic will need a wildcard for the Erste Bank Open, we have naturally reserved one for him”, says tournament director Straka.
