After his emotional triumph on home soil in 2019 Dominic Thiem returns to the Wiener Stadthalle trying to defend his title. “Last year’s win in Vienna surely was one of the highlights of my career. The success meant all the more to me because I had to overcome being down one set three times in a row. Thinking about the moment after the matchpoint in the final against Diego Schwartzman still gives me goosebumps”, says the reigning US Open champion.

One month before the start of the tournament a great players’ roster is already taking shape. Besides Thiem Russia’s Daniil Medvedev (ATP 5), Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 6) and Italian Matteo Berrettini (ATP 8) have already committed, making it 4 out of the ATP’s top 8 players. Add to that youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) and you also already have two players Thiem had to beat in New York on his way to his maiden Grand Slam title. Medvedev and Tsitsipas will play in Vienna for the first time.
With Stan Wawrinka Vienna also boasts a veteran who already has three Gand Slam titles under his belt. In 2014 the 35-year old triumphed at the Australian Open, in 2015 in Paris and in 2016 at the US Open.
The cut-off for the main draw is at world ranking no. 27, which makes Croatian Borna Coric the last player to be directly qualified for the main draw. To get into the qualification a player mustn’t be ranked lower than 45!
