Draw ceremony: Comedy stars bring laughter and excitement

When Michael Niavarani and Viktor Gernot take the stage, entertainment is guaranteed – even at a draw ceremony where plenty is at stake on court. With charm, wit, and perfect comedic timing, the two cabaret stars created a lively atmosphere in Vienna’s Marx Halle before things turned serious with the announcement of the Erste Bank Open 2025 main draw.

The draw produced several thrilling first-round matchups that will make tennis fans sit up and take notice. Jannik Sinner will open against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, while Cameron Norrie and Andrey Rublev will meet in a Red Bull BassLine rematch. Alexander Zverev also landed in an intriguing section of the draw.

The Austrian players present at the ceremony, Filip Misolic and Jurij Rodionov, both face top-class opposition right from the start. Rodionov will meet Alex de Minaur, the No. 3 seed from Australia, while Misolic faces Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina, ranked No. 43 in the world. Should both Austrians advance, they would meet in an all-Austrian clash in the round of 16.

Filip Misolic: “We’ve played twice before, but both times on clay. That’s why this match here on hard court will be especially interesting. Looking at the field, it’s a good draw for me – but of course, it will still be tough.”

Jurij Rodionov remains optimistic despite a challenging first-round task: “I was able to cause a surprise here in the Stadthalle before, beating Denis Shapovalov. I’m really looking forward to this atmosphere again – it’s always special for me to play here in front of the home crowd.”

In the same half of the draw, top seed Jannik Sinner will face Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in his opening match. The two recently met at the ATP 1000 event in Shanghai, where Sinner cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Another rematch will take place between Cameron Norrie (GBR) and Andrey Rublev, the tournament’s No. 7 seed. The pair faced off just last Friday at the Red Bull BassLine event, where Norrie dominated in the short tie-break format.

In the opposite half of the draw, former Vienna champion Daniil Medvedev will play his opener against Portugal’s Nuno Borges, while No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti (ITA) will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE). Another highlight will be the clash between Tallon Griekspoor and Karen Khachanov – two past Red Bull BassLine champions.

Alexander Zverev, the Erste Bank Open 2021 champion, will face a qualifier in his first match. In the same section of the draw, two qualifiers will meet directly – meaning one outsider is already guaranteed a place in the round of 16.
