After just 29 minutes, it looked like smooth sailing for Alex de Minaur (ATP 7). The 25-year-old had completely dominated the opening set, winning it 6–1. When he broke Matteo Berrettini (ATP 59) early in the second to go up 2–1, the outcome seemed all but decided. The Italian, who had spent more than three and a half hours on court the previous day in his round-of-16 win over Cameron Norrie, appeared to be running on empty.
But in tennis, it’s never over until the last ball is struck.
The 29-year-old Roman immediately broke back and suddenly found his rhythm again. De Minaur, however, stayed composed, breaking once more for 4–3, holding serve for 5–3, and even earning a match point on Berrettini’s next service game — which the Italian bravely saved. Berrettini broke back again to level the score and forced a tiebreak, but this time the Australian held firm. De Minaur converted his fourth match point to seal a 7–4 tiebreak and secure his place in the semifinals.
