The Tyrolean, who entered the qualifying round with a wild card, faced the world number 61 Emil Ruusuvuori from Finland. In the first set, the Finn fully lived up to his role as favorite and won the match 6-1. In the second set, Erler held up better, but finally had to admit defeat 1-6, 5-7. Jurij Rodionov also failed to win a set in his 3-6, 4-6 defeat of Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic.
In the last singles match of the day, Filip Misolic kept the Austrian flags high. The 22-year-old Styrian, ranked No. 181 in the world, surprised everyone with a smooth 6-3, 6-2 victory over Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas, ranked No. 69. In the second qualifying round on Sunday, Misolic will face Italy's Andrea Vavassori, ranked No. 147 in the world, at the center court of the Wiener Stadthalle. With another win, Misolic would be in the main draw of the Erste Bank Open.
