Jannik Sinner (ATP 2) opened his Erste Bank Open campaign against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier (ATP 51). The two had last met at the ATP 1000 Masters in Shanghai, where Sinner had won comfortably 6-3, 6-3.
In Vienna, the result was even more one-sided: Sinner cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory. From the very first game, the 24-year-old from South Tyrol produced moments of magic, giving his opponent no room to breathe. The logical consequence: a first-set bagel for Altmaier after just 22 minutes.
Things improved only slightly for the German in set two. He managed to hold serve for 1-0, but the pattern quickly repeated itself. Altmaier would win just one more service game, while Sinner broke twice more and closed out the match after 58 minutes, converting his second match point with a forehand winner. The stats told the story: of 77 points played, 55 went to Sinner.
"I started out quick with a break", Sinner explained afterwards. "From there I felt more relaxed, served well and played well."
In the round of 16, Sinner will face compatriot Flavio Cobolli, who defeated Czech Tomas Machac 7-6, 6-2 to advance.
