Zverev has no. 1 in sight

Alexander Zverev faces a potentially historic match on Thursday: Victory against Tallon Griekspoor and the resulting place in the quarter-finals would secure the German’s rise to the top of the world rankings. Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini will then close the day with an all-Italian encounter.

Not before 5:30 pm, top seed Alexander Zverev takes to Centre Court. The 2021 Vienna champion faces Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the last 16.

For Zverev, considerably more than a place in the next round is at stake: One more victory at the Erste Bank Open would be enough for the German to become world No. 1 for the first time on 2 November. He could therefore secure one of the greatest milestones of his career during the tournament in Vienna.

Griekspoor had to work hard for his place in the last 16. The Dutchman prevailed 6:1, 4:6, 7:6(2) against Brandon Nakashima in a thrilling three-set battle at the Marx Halle on Wednesday. He will now attempt to halt Zverev’s charge towards the top of the world rankings.

All-Italian encounter to close the day

Not before 8:00 pm, fans can look forward to an all-Italian last-16 contest between fourth seed Flavio Cobolli and fan favourite Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini impressed in his opening match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, recording a convincing straight-sets victory. The former Wimbledon finalist will now look to continue his remarkable record in Vienna: He has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his previous appearances at the Erste Bank Open.

The meeting between Cobolli and Berrettini will conclude another high-quality day of tennis – but first, the tennis world will turn its attention to Zverev and his opportunity to make history in Vienna.
