Learner Tien is only 20 years old – and in a remarkably short space of time, he has developed from one of the biggest talents in US tennis into an established member of the world elite. By last season at the latest, the tennis world knew exactly what the young Californian was capable of. At the 2025 Australian Open, Tien came through qualifying to reach the round of 16, defeating Daniil Medvedev along the way. In Beijing, he reached his first ATP 500 final, in Metz he claimed his maiden ATP Tour title, and he capped off the season by triumphing at the Next Gen ATP Finals.

High praise from Medvedev

Even Medvedev was impressed after his encounters with the American, describing Tien as one of the toughest opponents he had ever faced outside the “Big Three” – and even suggesting that he could become World No. 1 one day.

Tien has provided plenty of evidence in 2026 that this prediction may not be too far-fetched. At the Australian Open, the left-hander reached a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time, in Geneva he captured his second ATP title, and he has since climbed as high as No. 12 in the world rankings (currently No. 15).

Famous coach at his side

Alongside him is a man who knows exactly what it takes to reach the very top: Michael Chang. The former French Open champion also gives Tien an Austrian connection ahead of his trip to Vienna. Chang was the player Austria’s tennis legend Thomas Muster defeated in the 1995 French Open final to claim his only Grand Slam title.

Tien himself remains remarkably relaxed about his rapid rise. His recipe for success: gain experience, enjoy playing on the biggest stages and avoid putting too much pressure on himself. It is precisely this carefree approach that makes the 20-year-old one of the most difficult opponents to face on Tour.
