The Vienna tennis week has gained another major name: Grigor Dimitrov will compete at the Erste Bank Open from 24 October to 1 November. The Bulgarian has committed to the ATP 500 event, further strengthening a world-class field headed by Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.
However, fans will not have to wait until the start of the main draw to see Dimitrov in action. He will already take to the court at Red Bull BassLine on Friday, 23 October. The spectacular kick-off to the Erste Bank Open combines world-class tennis with DJ sounds, entertainment and a fast-paced tie-break format.
Dimitrov returns to Red Bull BassLine
It will not be Dimitrov’s first appearance at Red Bull BassLine. He thrilled the Vienna crowd at the innovative tennis event in 2022, defeating Filip Misolic and Andrey Rublev on his way to the final, where he was eventually beaten by Karen Khachanov.
Now the Bulgarian is ready for another shot at the title. Among his opponents will be Czech French Open semi-finalist Jakub Menšík and Spanish rising star Daniel Mérida. A total of six ATP players will compete at Red Bull BassLine, transforming the Centre Court of the Wiener Stadthalle into a thrilling combination of tennis arena and nightclub for one unforgettable evening.
The new “Domi’s Double” rule will add another tactical twist. Once per match, each player can signal to Dominic Thiem to make the next rally worth two points. However, regardless of who activates the rule, both points go to the winner of the rally – creating an exciting balance of opportunity and risk.
A fan favourite with exceptional touch
Dimitrov has been one of the best-known and most popular players on the ATP Tour for many years. His versatile game, trademark one-handed backhand and exceptional touch have earned the Bulgarian a large following around the world.
He has won nine ATP titles during his career. His most successful season came in 2017, when he triumphed at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 before being crowned ATP Finals champion later that year. He also reached his career-high ranking of World No. 3 that season. Dimitrov has additionally reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
He has also produced several memorable performances in Vienna. His best result at the Erste Bank Open came in 2022, when he reached the semi-finals. Now, with a wild card in hand, Dimitrov will have another opportunity to make his mark at the Wiener Stadthalle.
His confirmation means tennis fans can look forward to seeing Grigor Dimitrov twice in Vienna: first at Red Bull BassLine and then in the Erste Bank Open main draw.
