Zverev made the perfect start against Griekspoor, breaking the Dutchman in his opening service game. The top seed confidently protected his advantage and converted his first set point with an ace after 40 minutes to seal the opening set 6-4.
Untouchable on serve
Zverev continued to dominate on serve in the second set. Griekspoor was unable to make any inroads into the German’s service games, although the Dutchman also held firm for much of the set.
At 5-5, however, Zverev raised the pressure and secured the decisive break for a 6-5 lead. After 96 minutes, he finished the match in exactly the same fashion as the opening set: with an ace on his first match point.
The statistics underlined Zverev’s impressive performance. The German struck eleven aces and committed just one double fault, won 90 per cent of the points behind his first serve and did not face a single break point throughout the match.
With his 6-4, 7-5 victory, Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open and secured his rise to the top of the world rankings. From next Monday, the ATP rankings will officially list him as the new World No. 1.
Fery stuns Musetti
At the same time, Arthur Fery produced another surprise. The Brit defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in three hard-fought sets to secure his own place in the quarter-finals.
