The indoor hard-court action continues with star-studded fields at ATP 500 events this week on the ATP Tour, with the Swiss Indoors Basel in Basel and the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Novak Djokovic will make his first appearance in Basel since 2011, when he clinched the trophy. It will be an emotional week at the ATP 500 event, where home hero Stan Wawrinka will retire after a stellar career in which he reached No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings and won 16 tour-level titles, including three major crowns. Top seed Ben Shelton and Turin contenders Arthur Fils and Rafael Jodar will also feature.

Alexander Zverev is the top seed at the Erste Bank Open, where the German could become World No. 1 for the first time. Carlos Alcaraz is set for his first appearance in the Austrian capital since 2021, while Daniil Medvedev and Flavio Cobolli continue their pursuit of Nitto ATP Finals qualification.

ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch at each tournament:

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN BASEL
1) Djokovic returns, eyes Turin: Djokovic will compete in Basel for the first time since 2011, when he lifted the crown. The Serbian, who clinched his 102nd tour-level title earlier this month in Beijing, is looking to boost his bid for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals. Djokovic is currently 11th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and will face Ugo Humbert in his opener.

2) Wawrinka says goodbye: Home hero Wawrinka is retiring this week on home soil in Basel. The 41-year-old has reached the semi-finals twice at the Swiss event (2006 and 2011) and made four additional quarter-finals, notching a 17-17 record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The former World No. 3 will begin his event against eighth seed Jiri Lehecka.

3) Shelton eyes bounceback: Shelton is the top seed in Basel and looking to bounce back from a third-round exit in Shanghai, having reached his first major final at the US Open last month. The American, who reached the Basel final in 2024, plays his first-round match against former World No. 2 and 14-time ATP Tour titlist Casper Ruud.

4) Fils, Jodar continue Turin pursuit: Arthur Fils and Rafael Jodar are in contention for the Nitto ATP Finals, currently seventh and ninth, respectively, in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. Second seed Fils opens against Hubert Hurkacz, while Jodar, on the back of making his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Shanghai, debuts in Basel against Alejandro Tabilo.

5) Krawietz/Puetz top seeds: Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz are the top seeds in the doubles draw. The Germans are sixth in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings and aiming for their third Nitto ATP Finals appearance. They will face competition from second seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, who are 10th in the Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN VIENNA
1) Zverev eyes World No. 1: Top seed Zverev arrives in Vienna on a mission. If the German reaches the quarter-finals at the ATP 500 event, he will become World No. 1 on 2 November. The 2021 champion begins his Vienna campaign against #NextGenATP star Martin Landaluce.

2) Alcaraz returns: Alcaraz returns to the Austrian capital for the first time since 2021, opening against recent US Open semi-finalist Karen Khachanov. The Spaniard is seeking his fourth tour-level trophy of the season, which would mark five consecutive years with at least four crowns.

3) Medvedev arrives on a high: Medvedev heads to Vienna having successfully defended his Almaty title. The 30-year-old is currently fifth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin with 2,670 points and will continue his Turin quest at the ATP 500 event, where he won the crown in 2022. Medvedev will open against Daniel Merida.

4) Cobolli leads more Turin hopefuls: The race for the Nitto ATP Finals continues to heat up in Vienna, with Flavio Cobolli, Frances Tiafoe and Alex de Minaur targeting deep runs to boost their Turin hopes. Cobolli, who fell in the Brussels semi-finals, sits sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin with 3,640 points, followed by eighth-placed Tiafoe (3,380) and De Minaur in 10th (3,285).

5) Heliovaara/Patten seek sixth title of 2026: Joint-World No. 1s Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten are the top seeds in the Vienna doubles draw and are chasing their sixth tour-level title of the year. The Wimbledon champions could face recent Shanghai champions and home heroes Lucas Mieldler and Neil Oberleitner in the last eight.
