Miedler/Oberleitner set sights on home title

Austria’s new leading doubles team is preparing for its biggest home match together to date: Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner will face Americans Ryan Seggerman and Learner Tien in the Erste Bank Open doubles final on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. With 13 wins from 15 matches together, the Austrians are aiming to crown their remarkable run on Centre Court at the Wiener Stadthalle.

Since winning the Shanghai Masters, Miedler and Oberleitner have reached the final at every tournament they have played. After finishing runners-up in Almaty, they have now advanced to another championship match in front of their home crowd. Their impressive record as a team currently stands at 13 wins and only two defeats.

The duo have repeatedly shown strong nerves in Vienna. After opening with a victory over Petr Nouza and Michael Venus, Miedler and Oberleitner knocked out top seeds, Wimbledon champions and the world’s leading doubles team Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten in the quarter-finals. They followed that up with a 7-6(0), 7-6(9) semi-final victory over Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Guinard, converting their third match point.

Carried through the tight moments by the fans

“We’re on a good run and very grateful for it,” said Miedler ahead of the final. “Even so, we continue to take things match by match. Now we’re really looking forward to playing here at the Stadthalle tomorrow.”

Oberleitner highlighted the importance of the support from the home crowd: “It’s remarkable how well we’re playing at the moment. The fans carried us through the tight moments in particular. We want to bring that onto the court again tomorrow.”

Ryan Seggerman and Learner Tien await in the final. The American pair secured the second place in the championship match with a 6-3, 7-6(9) victory over Francisco Cerúndolo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

“He has done his part – now it’s my turn”

The Austrians have already agreed on a clear division of labour for the move from the Marx Halle to Centre Court. “It’s co-working,” Miedler explained with a smile. “Neil said he would carry me through the Marx Halle and I would take over at the Stadthalle. He has done his part – now it’s my turn.”

For Oberleitner, the final will be an especially emotional home match. “I live only ten minutes from the Stadthalle and could walk here. I came here to watch as a child. The fact that I now get to play here myself is an unbelievable feeling. I’m incredibly excited. Lucas knows what it’s like and will tell me what to expect and how to handle it.”

Miedler will contest his fourth Erste Bank Open doubles final. He won the title alongside Alexander Erler in 2022 and 2024 before returning to the championship match with Francisco Cabral last year. He therefore knows exactly what awaits his partner on Sunday: “It’s a huge adjustment. There are 10,000 people here and the scale is completely different.”

The Austrian duo will now aim to crown their extraordinary run with a home title on Sunday.
