Miedler and Oberleitner were involved in a closely contested battle with Finland’s Heliövaara and Great Britain’s Patten from the outset. All four players held serve throughout the opening set before the top-seeded favourites edged the tie-break 7-5.
The Austrians refused to be discouraged. The second set also had to be decided in a tie-break, where Miedler and Oberleitner quickly took control and forced a match tie-break with a commanding 7-2 scoreline.
The Austrian duo carried their momentum and confidence into the decider, established an early lead and eventually sealed the match tie-break 10-5 to the delight of the home crowd.
One more win away from the final
Miedler and Oberleitner will face Argentina’s Guido Andreozzi and France’s Manuel Guinard in Saturday’s semi-final. Andreozzi and Guinard also required a match tie-break to defeat Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 6-7(5), 6-2, 11-9 in their quarter-final.
The Austrians now face their most important match of the tournament so far at the Marx Halle. Another victory would earn them a place in Sunday’s doubles final on Centre Court at the Wiener Stadthalle.
Miedler and Oberleitner will be counting on the support of the home crowd on Saturday. Come to the Marx Halle, make some noise for the Austrian duo and help carry them towards the final!
