Zverev took control from the very first rally. He broke serve in the opening game and added further breaks for 3-0 and 5-0 before completing a flawless opening set. Fery did not win his first game until the ninth game of the match, reducing the deficit to 1-2 in the second set.
Zverev again made the perfect start with an immediate break and never allowed the Briton to seriously threaten his lead. After only 58 minutes, he sealed the emphatic 6-0, 6-2 victory.
“I felt very comfortable on court”
“I’m doing wonderfully, but I’m always doing well,” Zverev joked after the match. He was understandably pleased with his performance: “It was a very good match for me today. Arthur may not possess overwhelming power, but he plays very fast and is tactically very smart. I felt extremely comfortable on court today.”
Zverev also had words of praise for his young opponent: “This is Arthur’s first year on Tour and he reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon. I think we are going to see a lot more of him over the next ten years.”
Little rest after his historic achievement
Zverev had found little rest during the night following his historic achievement the previous evening. By reaching the quarter-finals, he had secured his rise to the top of the ATP Rankings and will officially become world No. 1 on Monday.
“I didn’t get much sleep last night, if I’m being honest,” Zverev admitted with a smile. “I still won’t be trying that strategy more often, even though it worked pretty well today.”
