The German Vienna 2021 winner and tournament No. 1 didn't let anything get to him from the start against the world No. 48, remained untouchable on his own service and put the American under pressure on his serve time and again. This led to two breaks in the first set. In the second set, Giron was able to hold his own service for longer, but when Giron served against losing the match at 6-5 for Zverev, the time had come. After 72 minutes, the world number 3 converted the first match point to win the match in commanding style. To illustrate Zverev's strength on serve: against Giron, he only conceded four points out of 44 played on his own serve...
“It was a pretty good match from me,” Zverev summed up after the match. “I'm happy to have done it in two sets. He served better in the second set. The break at 7-5 came at the right time, even though a break is always good, of course.” There was also praise for the fans in the sold-out Stadthalle: “I feel extremely comfortable here. I love the stadium and the spectators. Praise also goes to the organizers, who do such a great job with the atmosphere. It's simply fun to be here on the pitch.”
It was Zverev's 61st match win of the season - a record for the Hamburg native. Zverev thus moved to 3-0 in the head-to-head. In the quarterfinal he will meet Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian advanced to the quarters due to Frenchman Gael Monfils retiring because of an illness.
Berrettini wears down Tiafoe
Matteo Berrettini had a much tougher time. The Italian started like a shot against Frances Tiafoe, the 2021 finalist, and took the first set 6:3. In the second set, the Roman was already serving for the match, but Tiafoe was able to fend off no fewer than three match points and save himself in the tie-break, which he won 8:6 to force a third set. There, Berrettini finally gave the American the slip with 6:3. In the end it was 6:3, 6:7 (6), 6:3 for Berrettini, who is now through to the quarter-finals.
