Wildcard entrant Lukas Neumayer opened Saturday’s qualifying action on Centre Court against fourth seed Vít Kopřiva (CZE). The Austrian made the perfect start with an early break and saved several break points before taking the opening set 6–4.

Neumayer also broke early in the second set. Kopřiva briefly found his rhythm and levelled the score, but Neumayer responded with another break and completed a 6–4, 6–3 victory. On Sunday, the Salzburg native will battle for a place in the main draw.

Schwärzler falls short after close battle

An all-Austrian clash on the final day of qualifying on Sunday had been within reach, but Joel Schwärzler’s campaign came to a narrow end in the opening round. The Austrian faced fifth seed Titouan Droguet (FRA) and was defeated after three hard-fought sets.

Schwärzler failed to convert several opportunities in the opening set and lost it 3–6. He made a strong start to the second, breaking early and maintaining his level and intensity to take the set 6–3. Schwärzler also broke in his opponent’s opening service game of the deciding set, but Droguet fought his way back and placed the Austrian under increasing pressure. With Schwärzler serving at 5–6, the Frenchman secured the decisive break to seal a 6–3, 3–6, 7–5 victory.

Plenty of action at the Marx Halle

The opening round of qualifying also produced several thrilling encounters at the Marx Halle. Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego defeated second seed Adolfo Daniel Vallejo of Paraguay 6–2, 3–6, 6–3.

Britain’s Jacob Fearnley also needed all three sets against seventh seed Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain, prevailing 6–4, 3–6, 6–3. Slovakia’s Alex Molčan, meanwhile, required only two sets to defeat eighth-seeded Serbian Hamad Medjedović.
