Alexander Zverev kept his nerve in the decisive match of the weekend. The 2021 Vienna champion defeated Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3 on Sunday to secure the crucial points in Team Europe’s 13-5 triumph. It was already the fourth time that Zverev had clinched the Laver Cup for his team. With 26 points overall, the German is also the most successful player in the history of the competition.
Cobolli and Menšík put Europe on course for victory
Two more Vienna contenders provided the perfect start to the final day. Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Menšík defeated Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3 in doubles, moving Team Europe to within one victory of the title. For Menšík, it was already his second doubles win of the weekend after teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz to beat Fritz and Alexander Bublik on Friday.
Zverev had also added a doubles victory on Saturday. Partnering Casper Ruud, he prevailed in straight sets against Bublik and Brandon Nakashima.
Vienna stars go head-to-head
From an Erste Bank Open perspective, it was particularly exciting to see several players who will compete in Vienna from 24 October to 1 November already facing each other in London. Brandon Nakashima defeated Jakub Menšík in a closely contested match tiebreak on Friday. One day later, Learner Tien also prevailed in a match tiebreak against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli before eventually falling to Zverev on Sunday.
All five Vienna contenders therefore recorded at least one victory at the Laver Cup. Zverev, Cobolli and Menšík celebrated the title with Team Europe, while Tien and Nakashima collected important points for Team World.
The weekend in London offered a high-quality preview of the Erste Bank Open. Before long, the Laver Cup stars will no longer be sitting together on the team bench – they will be back on opposite sides of the net at the Wiener Stadthalle and Marx Halle.
