On October 21 and 22 2023, the qualification for the main draw of the Erste Bank Open will take place. Every year, the qualifiers for Austria's largest ATP tournament feature seasoned stars and up-and-coming youngsters.
The reason for this is simple: the line-up of the Erste Bank Open is world class every year - this year alone there are no less than eight players from the top 15. That raises the bar for the so-called "cut" - that is, the world ranking up to which an appearance in the main draw is guaranteed - pretty high. Or in this case: low. In recent years, the "cut" has always been below or around world ranking position 30. This high-class field guarantees absolute world-class tennis even in the qualifying rounds.
The most spectacular example from recent years is certainly Frances Tiafoe. The US American, now an absolute world star, still had to fight his way through qualifying in 2021. His run of success was only halted in the final by Alexander Zverev.
